Mentoring is making a difference and changing the future one child at a time.
Being a Mentor…
Being a mentor means being there for a youth in need of support and guidance. As a caring adult you can bring these things and many more into the life of a young person in need.
Who are our Mentors...
Adult ages 21+ who are interested in participating in the One-By-One program spend time during the school day with teens providing insight, guidance and challenges in individual or group settings. Teens are referred by school staff and join the group session or meet with their mentor during a free period.
Mentors possess patience, dedication, commitment and the desire to be a positive role-model for a young person. We ask that mentors be willing to spend 1-2 hours per week with their mentee for a period of one year.
How to get involved...
Anyone interested in becoming a mentor should contact the Healthy Communities Partnership Office at 717-264-1470. Interested individuals will receive a mentorship application and training schedule. We are hoping to hold the next mentor training in the summer of 2012.
Our Expectations...
We expect that a mentor will be committed and consistent. Commitment should be a minimum of the entire school year. As a mentor, you need to be consistent and let the child know you will be there for him/her through this school year, unconditionally.
We expect our mentors to be safe and supportive. Mentoring training and background clearances must be completed before the mentoring relationship begins.
In training, mentors are offered information and guidance on working with teen groups, understanding confidentiality and the roles of HCP in the mentoring relationship.
Mentors wishing to work with groups are then paired with another adult mentor. For those hoping to work individually with teens, HCP will work to create a match based on the interests and availability of both partners.
