sponsored the event, and Doug Coldsmith, a Student Assistance Program Liaison with HCP facilitated a discussion following the film about some of the major themes in the movie - determination, faith, mentors, and making something positive out of the waves that crash into our lives. According to HCP Executive Director, Karen Johnston, “We need to engage our children in serious conversation about what they can do to take responsibility for their futures. Our kids face many challenges today as they navigate home-life, school, their peers and everything that surrounds them in the media. We need to teach them to overcome those challenges so they can achieve their potential.” Many kids talked about having faced adversity and bad experiences in their lives. The kids also talked about having friends, family and community to help them and provide support, as well as knowing who to turn to when they have obstacles and challenges. “The kids really seemed to enjoy the movie and participated well in the discussion that followed”, noted Johnston. “We hope to offer more movies and discussions for area youth to help them develop skills and knowledge to be healthy”.
HCP received a grant to bring the Adolescent Depression Awareness Program (ADAP) to Franklin County schools. While the grant will not allow for all schools to be offered the program, we hope to teach it in at least two area schools. The ADAP curriculum, which was developed at Johns Hopkins, has 3-45 minute sessions that are offered to 9th graders to learn about depression and ways to help. It is being piloted first in Greencastle’s 9th grade health classes, and we hope to offer the important health lesson to one other school this year. The grant funding to provide ADAP was provided by the Franklin County Foundation.

This year’s “Run for the Health of It” will be offered at the Tayamentasacha cross country course at Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School. While the race has been run in this area before, the actual course has changed and HCP is adding some new activities after the race. Planned to coincide with Women’s Health Week and World No Tobacco day, the run is a good way to support health and well being in our communities. Come join the fun on May 12th. Race registrations can be downloaded here or you can register by calling: 717-264-1470.
HCP offers Free Nicotine Replacement! Participants of the Freedom From Smoking Classes will be offered free NRT’s for 4 weeks. Chambersburg classes start in January while classes in Waynesboro start in February. Anyone interested in signing up for class should contact Stacy or Celeste at 717-264-1470.
HCP was awarded a grant by Target Corporation to host two “Reading for Life” events at Keystone Health Center. These events have been held in the past, and feature various agencies and providers who present information about health and wellness. The fairs also feature games and fun activities offered by the Franklin County library system, healthy food and snacks and a special area for reading. Each child or family attending the fair gets a book to take home. Look for more information in early spring.
